Scientific Police Laboratory Report
Forensic Report No. 200707116-CR/L
Requesting Party: Portimao DIC of the Policia Judiciaria
NUIPC: 201/070 GALGS
Request number: 189/2007
Examination initiated on 06 May 2007
The report on the collection of blood vestiges carried out on 06
May 2007, from the wall, next to the main entrance of Quinta dos
Figos, situated on Rua 1 de Maio, in Praia da Luz, in Lagos, is
requested.
Observations and Analyses Made
A team from the Crime Scene section of the Scientific Police
Laboratory, composed of the undersigned officers, after a
request made by the Portimao DIC of the Policia Judiciaria, went
to Rua 1 de Maio, in Praia da Luz, in Lagos, where we were
requested to proceed to collect various stains, supposedly
haematic that were on the wall and the ground in that street.
This collection was within the area of investigation into the
disappearance of an English girl.
Here is a map of the scene.
Photo 1: Map of the scene showing the entrance to Quinta dos
Figos encircled in red.
1811.jpg
Upon the team's arrival at the scene it was reported to us by
the inspectors present that the supposed blood stains were found
on a wall and on the ground close to the wall, next to main
entrance of Quinta dos Figos
Photo 2 : Panoramic view of the site where the supposed blood
stains were found.
Photos 3 , 4 and 5: Entrance to the Quinta dos Figos where
eventual biological vestiges were found and detail of the plaque
with the name of the property and of the plaque with the street
name.
1812.jpg
Photo 6: Shot of the area of the Quinta dos Figos wall where the
supposed blood stains were found.
From the observation made of the wall and its proximities
various stains were detected with a brownish red colour which
suggested that they could be of haematic origin. These were
submitted to tests to detect peroxide existing in the blood
using the Kastle-Mayer test, in both cases the reactions were
positive.
The stain referred to as vestige no. 3 was further submitted for
testing to determine whether the blood was of animal origin, but
reacted positively as being human blood.
The blood stains mentioned previously were separated by zones
and referenced as vestige no. 1 those being the stains found on
the gravel ground, vestiges no. 2 being the blood stains that were
found on top of the wall and vestige no. 3 as being the stains
that were found on the ground in the area where there
cobblestones.

1815.jpg
The collection of the vestiges indicated as vestiges nos. 1, 2 and
3 was begun using slightly moistened swabs, in accordance with
the procedures of the Scientific Police Laboratory's Biology
Area.
Conclusion:
Upon the request of the Portimao DIC present at the site,
collection was made of 3 swabs containing blood vestiges,
referred to in this report as vestiges nos. 1,2 and 3, which were
delivered to the Biology Area, by means of delivery guide no.
189/2007 - CR/L, copy of which is annexed, in order to be
preserved for further/eventual forensic examinations.
The test for the determination of animal species carried out on
vestige 3 was placed in an evidence bag series A no. 022917 and
delivered to the Portimao DIC.

appeared to be of haematic origin, these were submitted
to tests to search for the presence of peroxide existing
in blood by means of the Kastle-Mayer test, only one
stain, situated on a cupboard door in the kitchen
reacted positively.
The stain in question was submitted to testing to

Letter to the National
Forensics Institute (INML) from Goncalo Amaral
17th August 2007
The present inquiry is
in relation to the investigation of the disappearance of
Madeleine McCann on 3rd May from P da L.
The
English authorities in possession of elements collected
from the family home in Leicestershire, which are being
examined in an unidentified laboratory, traced the
girl's DNA profile, in annex to this document.
As
it is necessary to the investigation we request the
following:
1. Whether in the tests done by the
INML Madeleine's profile was established?
2. In
the case of a positive answer to point 1, that it should
be determined whether the girl is the daughter of the
parents identified ? Gerald Patrick McCann and Kate
Healy.
3. Information about whether the profile
obtained by the INML corresponds to the profile traced
in the English laboratory, on the request of the British
authorities.
4. If there are differences between
the English and Portuguese profiles that a report should
be drawn up for this inquiry.
5. In the follow-up
of point 4, we request to be informed whether in the
English profile the girl is the daughter of the McCann
couple.
6. Other information that might be of use
to the investigation.
Signed G. Amaral

Reply from the Forensics Institute (INML) to Goncalo
Amaral
22-08-2007
Reply to Queries
- We inform you that
none of the samples received by this institute were
designated as supposedly belonging to the missing girl
and we therefore, cannot reply to this query.
- Samples were studied - hair and a piece of cloth -
nuclear DNA profiles only being obtained from 4 samples,
which upon comparison with the DNA profiles of Kate and
Gerry, could not belong to the girl.
- The
samples were then studied using mitochondrial DNA
analysis, the same was done for the other samples,
giving the results in accordance with our report of 9th
July No. 2007/000226 LX-BC.
- As requested in
point 5, it was determined that the profile obtained by
the British lab could belong to a son/daughter of the
McCanns.
- The comparison of the profiles
obtained in autossomic STR from Kate and Gerry McCann
with the profile obtained was carried out. Signed |

CONCLUSIONS
1st- The macro- and microscopic analysis of 257 hairs revealed 245 human and
12 non-human.
2nd- With respect to autosomic STRs the genetic profiles of the following
analysed samples matched with the reference sample indicated:
- hair root CEnv 7-51 recovered in the apartment (entrance hall-Env.7) matched
with Gerald McCann, father of the victim.
- hair root PVT07 recovered in the vehicle (floor in front of rear seat Env.4) match
with Robert James Queriol Eveleigh Murat.
3rd- With respect to autosomic STRs the female genetic profile identified from hair
root C742-05 recovered in the vehicle (floor in front of the front seat- Env 3)
did not match any profile from the reference samples.
4th- With respect to autosomic STRs the male genetic profile identified from the spot on
the cloth fragment (bedspread of the bed next to window in the children's bedroom- Env 5)
did not match any profile from the reference samples.
5th- In the samples from apartment 5-A, several mitochondrial DNA profiles were found:
- Profile identified by letter "C", present in 53 samples, was identical to that of Kate
Healy, mother of the victim, meaning those samples were from her or from someone having the same
maternal bloodline.
- Profile identified by letter "N", present in 24 samples, was identical to that of Gerald
McCann, father of the victim, meaning those samples were from him or from someone having the same
maternal bloodline.
- Profile identified by letter "G", present in 1 samples, was identical to that of Matthew
David Oldfield, meaning that sample was from him or from someone having the same maternal bloodline.
- Profile identified by letter "I", present in 1 samples, was identical to that of David
Anthony Payne, meaning that sample was from him or from someone having the same maternal bloodline.
- Profile identified by letter "O", present in 2 samples, was identical to that of Russell
James O'Brien, meaning those samples were from him or from someone having the same maternal bloodline.
- Profile identified by letter "L", present in the spot on the bedspread of the bed next to
the window and in seven hairs, meaning that all these samples came from the same person or from someone
having the same maternal bloodline, did not match any of the reference samples.
- Profiles identified by letters "B", "D", "F", "J" and
"Q" are different from the above, and from each other, and are distinct from reference samples.
6th- In the samples analysed from Residencia Liliana and the vehicle, several mitochondrial DNA profiles
were found:
- Profile identified by letter "M", present in 48 samples (35 from Residencia Liliana and 13
from the vehicle), was identical to that of Robert James Queriol Eveleigh Murat meaning those samples
were from him or from someone having the same maternal bloodline.
- Profile identified by letter "K", present in 14 samples (1 from Residencia Liliana and 13
from the vehicle), meaning that all these samples came from the same person or from someone having the
same maternal bloodline, did not match any of the reference samples.
- One of the 13 samples from the vehicle in letter "K" - hair root C742-05 (floor in front
of the front seat - Env 3) showed a female DNA genetic profile.
7th- The remaining 28 samples analysed, of which 17 were recovered from the apartment, showed mitochondrial
DNA from different from each other, and distinct from those above.
8th- Of the 245 hairs analysed, no results were obtained from 52.

Information
With the aim of providing the Scientific Police Laboratory with
the DNA profile of Madeleine McCann so that they are able to
make comparisons with the DNA profiles that have been identified
in the examinations requested, on this date and within the
framework of the cooperation between the PJ and the UK
authorities, I made a telephone call to Jose de Freitas, an
officer with New Scotland Yard and asked him to send me by email
the girl's profile that was determined by examinations carried
out in a UK laboratory, referred to previously in a letter that
is part of this process.
In response to my request, Jose de Freitas sent me an email, a
copy of which I immediately sent to the director of the SPL, Dr
Saudade Nunes.

The results were
delivered to us in a letter
dated 9th July 2007 ref
13.079, with a cover letter
dated 11th July 2007.
Upon reading the report
we observed that several DNA
profiles are defined but
which have not been
identified.
The
apartment from which the
samples were collected for
analysis is occupied by
families from the UK.
The UK police and legal
authorities have informed us
about the existence of a
database for the register of
DNA profiles.
As the
objective is to proceed to
identify the profiles
defined in your analyses we
request that you send us the
list of unidentified
profiles. This request
has the objective of seeking
their eventual
identification through the

The
detection and analysis of the amplified DNA was carried
out in the automatic sequencer ABI Prism Genetic
Analyser.
Conclusion
-
In the swabs described in lines 1, 2 and 3, blood
vestiges were found. - In the swab described in line
4 very slight traces of blood were found. - In the
DNA analysis of the haematic vestiges detected in the
swabs described in lines 1 and 2 a profile was obtained
belonging to an individual of the male sex. - In the
DNA analysis of the swab described in line 3 only some
results were obtained from the loci that were studied.
According to the results obtained a mixture of
biological traces belonging to more than one individual
were found, it only being possible to indicate the
profile of the main contributor who presented an
identity of polymorphisms for a set of loci studied with
the profile described in the previous line. - There
is no identity of polymorphisms of the haematic vestiges
detected in the swabs described in lines 1, 2 and 3 with
the profiles sent by email on 8th November 2007 and in
the letter number 034308 of the 4th October 2007. -
In the DNA analysis of the haematic vestiges detected in
the swab described in line 4 results were only obtained
from some of the loci studied, corresponding to the
profile of an individual of the female sex. According to
the results obtained, there is no polymorphism identity
with the profiles sent by email on 8th November 2007 and
in the letter number 034308 of the 4th October 2007.

Forensic report
No. 200711800-FI
Requested by:: Portimao DIC
NUIPC 201-07 Galgs
Correspondence number: 3609 of 31st October 2007
Examination initiated : October 2007
Material for Examination
I. Six collection kits of woven fibres which present the
following references relating to the area of vestige
collection:
1. 'Inferior part of wall' and 'Pip'.
2. 'Superior part of wall' and 'PSP'
3. 'Middle part of wall' and 'PMP'
4. 'Middle part of wall' and 'PMP'
5. 'Superior part of wall' and 'PSP'
6. 'Inferior part of wall' and 'Pip'.
Each kit comes inside an orange coloured envelope, each
of these envelopes are inside a paper envelope with the
following references, amongst others 'Vestige No. 26,
Apartment 5 A, OC resort, P da L. Garden wall of the
apartment, 2007/08/02'.
II - A pyjama camisole, pink in colour with motifs
stamped and sewn on to the front (the latter of
material, buttons and messages) (see photographs 1 and
2). Three labels can be seen, one of them has the
following references, amongst others: 'Top 100% COTTON
EXCLUSIVE OF TRIMMINGS'.
III - White coloured pyjama bottoms with stamped designs
in pink shades (different tones), green and yellow and
with a trim at the bottom of each leg (see photo 3 and
4). Three labels can be observed, one of them with the
following reference, amongst others 'Bottom 100% COTTON
EXCLUSIVE OF TRIMMINGS'.
REQUEST
We request the examination of the samples collected from
the garden wall with the aim of carrying out the 'search
and identification of eventual fibres and their
comparison with the two parts of the pyjamas similar to
those the girl was wearing when she disappeared'.
OBSERVATIONS AND TESTS CARRIED OUT
With the objective of identifying the fibres from the
searches for samples from the garden wall, it was
proceeded to identify the prime material of the pyjamas,
from which we had previously collected reference samples
from both the top and the bottom. Identification was
done using an optical microscope, the following results
were obtained:
Pyjama camisole:
The front was made up of white base thread and external
pink thread.
- Prime material of the white thread: cotton and
synthetic fibre (very pigmented).
- Prime material of the pink thread: cotton (the
colouring was not visible by microscope).
The back of the top consisted of pink coloured thread
- Prime material of the pink thread: cotton (the
colouring was not visible by microscope).
The Pyjama bottoms:
The material of the pyjama bottoms consisted of white
coloured thread.
- Prime material of the thread: cotton
Observations using a stereoscopical magnifier
and an optical microscope
With the objective of comparing eventual textile fibres
collected from the wall with the fibres from the
pyjamas, a search was made of the textile fibres
(synthetic white fibres and white and pink cotton
fibres) from the samples collected for examination. The
search was carried out using a stereoscopical magnifier
and an optical microscope, pink and white cotton fibres
having been selected as well as white synthetic fibres
for subsequent comparison.
Comparison Microscope
The fibres selected were compared to the fibres from the
pyjamas using an optical comparison microscope. The
following results were obtained:
- No synthetic fibres were detected that were compatible
with the pyjama fibres.
- In relation to the cotton fibres, although numerous
white cotton fibres were detected in all the samples, in
none of them were vestiges detected that enabled
discriminatory comparative analyses (such as for
example, vestiges of stamping).
CONCLUSION
The analysis of the samples collected from the garden
wall of the apartment of the OC yielded the following
results:
- No synthetic fibres compatible with the fibres
received for comparison from the pyjamas were found.
- Numerous white cotton fibres were found. However, this
result should not be considered to be significant, given
that according to studies of distribution and
persistence of textile fibres it should always be
possible to find fibres of different types and colours
on any surface, white cotton fibres being very common
and without discriminatory parameters.
- In addition, the interval of time that has passed
between the events being investigated and the collection
of samples (out in the open air) means the existence of
fibres from the date of the events is of very low
probability.
Note: The material remains archived at the SPL.

Accession Number1 : 07/5949
Accession Number 2: 07-6008
Submitting Agency 1
Galveston County Medical Examiner
Submitting Agency 2: FBI
Items received
Received via Mark Ingraham on November 8, 2007:
07-5949.1 Unidentified Remains Sample, Bone.
Received via email from SA Gay on November 20, 2007:
07-6008-1 Genetic data, STR Profile of Madeleine McCann.
Results
Human DNA extracted from item 07-5949.1 was analysed for
thirteen genetic loci using the Applied Biosystems
AmpFISTR Profiler Plus ID and Cofiler systems. Genetic
data for item 07-6008.1 was sent by the FBI.
The genetic data obtained from item 07-5949 was uploaded
into the Unidentified Human /Remains index of the
Combined DNA Index System (CODIS). At the request of the
submitting agency, the data obtained from the
unidentified remains 07-5949.1 was compared to the data
sent associated with item 07.6008.1.
The nuclear genetic data associated with items 07-5949.1
and 07-6008.1 do not match. Therefore Madeleine McCann
is excluded as a potential contributor of the
unidentified remains associated with item 07-5949.1.
A portion of the remitted remains will be maintained by
the UNT Center for Human Identification Laboratory.
In the event that you have any questions or if we can be
of further assistance, please feel free to contact the
laboratory at*****
The above is the opinion of the undersigned, and this
report shall not be reproduced without verbal or written

US Dept of Justice
Federal Bureau of Investigation
Office of the Legal Attache, Madrid, Spain
21st January 2008
To: Portuguese Judicial Police
Subject: DNA
Comparison for victim Madeleine McCann
On 05 November 2007, the Portuguese Judicial Police (PJ)
requested the FBI conduct a DNA comparison from the
known DNA of victim Madeleine McCann to that of a body
of a minor female (since identified as deceased minor
victim Riley Ana Sawyers) that washed ashore near
Galveston, Texas, USA on or about 04 November 2007.
On 05 November 2007, the FBI's legal attache office in
Madrid, Spain forwarded the known DNA sample provided by
the PJ to the FBI Field Office in Houston, Texas, USA.
Subsequently, the known DNA of Madeleine McCann was
submitted to University of North Texas, Health Science
Center at Fort Worth, Texas, USA for analysis. This
medical facility conducted a DNA analysis and comparison
of the known sample of victim Madeleine McCann, and on
06 December 2007 it advised the results were a negative
match to that of the body discovered near Galveston.
US law enforcement authorities have since determined the
previously unidentified body that washed ashore near
Galveston is that of deceased minor Riley Ana Sawyers.
Both of the parents of Riley Ana Sawyers have since been
formally charged with her murder.
Attached to this report is one photocopy of a DNA
analysis report dated 06 December 2007 from the
University of North Texas, Health Science Center at Fort
Worth, Texas, USA entitled 'Missing Persons DNA Database
Report'. |

In response to your letter I advise that a mitochondrial
DNA profile is not an exclusive or objective
identification of a single [determined] person.
Consulting the regional control sequences in the EMPOP
database we find 8 results that are identical (zero
differences) to the Haplotype S sample, from a total
population [universe] of 3830 samples in the 'West
Eurasia' population group, known as the populations of
Europe.

As I understand it, the EMPOP
database is the global repository of regional profiles
of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). The person doing the
query entered the specific mt DNA characteristics of
JT's hair into the query form and found 8 exact matches
in the database, i.e. at least eight maternal lines
having the identical Haplotype to JT exist in Europe.
There were no exact matches in the other three regional
groups.
Because of this result the inquiry could
not say with absolute certainty that the hair found in
Burgau actually came from JT because it could have come
from any person born of a mother belonging to any of the
eight profiles in the database - one profile, of course,
had to be of JT's maternal line, so it could have been
some distant (or close) relative. |

Information
To: The Coordinator of the Criminal Investigation, Dr

From: Inspector Joao Direito
Subject: Collection of eventual vestiges
I bring to your knowledge and following superior orders
that today at about 20.00 the Assistant Specialists from
the LPC Fernando Viegas and Lino Rodrigues, after seeing
the recorded images from the sniffer dog inspection
carried out on 31-07-2007 in Apartment 5 A of the Ocean
Club Resort, duly explained in the report adjoining the
inspection, proceeded to collect the tiles where the
dogs used in the exercise signalled the eventual
existence of blood vestiges as well as the presence of a
cadaver in this same site.
The tiles in question were taken from the flooring with
the aim of preserving the eventual vestiges existing
there, in order to be subjected for competent laboratory
examination.
The procedures were filmed in their totality with the
aim of illustrating the way in which the lifting of the
tiles was done and the tools that were used, thereby
enabling forensic scientists to have a better perception
of the circumstances inherent to the action taken. This
resulted in the recording of two video cassettes (mini
Dv) which are attached.
The LPC officers will prepare the corresponding report.

RESULTS
[b]1- Morphologic
analysis of the hairs
All the
hairs received for analysis were subjected
to macro- and microscopic characterisation.
It was observed that some hairs were only
stems while other had both root and stem.
The majority of those with roots were found
to be telogenic.
2- Nature of
the sample

corresponding to vestigio n'. 5 collected
from the counterpane of the bed next to the
window of the children's bedroom:
Positive.
3- Study of
the nuclear DNA
Autosomic STRs
results were obtained from the following
vestigios: root of one of the hairs
collected from the bedroom floor of the
Burgau apartment (Vg3) and in the lower zone
of te fibre from the car boot. Table 1
includes, also, the profile of the spot from

4- Study of mitochondrial DNA
The vestigios delivered on 08/11/2007 and on 14/12/2007:
Mitochondrial DNA results were obtained in 137 hairs
(roots and/or stems) from the 187 analysed. It was not
possible to obtain any results from 46 hairs, and in 4
cases incomplete sequences were obtained.
5-
Total of the samples studied:
Since May 2007, the
following samples were analysed in the GENETIC AND
BIOLOGICAL FORENSIC SERVICES offices of the North,
Central e South Delegations of the Instituto Nacional of
Medicina Legal:
- 25 reference samples. - 447
vestigios, comprising: >> 444 hairs, of which 432
were human; >> 1 mark on a counterpane;
>> 2 objects
from a car boot.
Of the 432 human hairs (roots
and/or stems), 315 provided the results reflected in
Table 2.

CONCLUSIONS
First: In total in the two phases of the case there
were 25 reference samples and 447 vestiges studied: 1
spot on the counterpane; 2 objects from the car boot and
444 hairs. The macro- and microscopic analyses of the
444 hairs revealed that 432 were humano and 12
non-human, no result being obtained for 98 hairs and
only partial results for l9 hairs. With respect to the
plastic object from the car boot no results were
obtained.
Second: The search for
saliva in
the mark on the counterpane from one of the beds in
apartament 5A of tourist resort Ocean Club was
positive.
Third: The study of
autosomic STRs from the sample received in the 2 phases
revealed:
There were
matches between the reference sample genetic profiles
and the following analysed samples:
- hair
root (CEnv 7-51) collected in apartament Ocean Club
(entrance hall env.7) and Gerald Mccann, father of the
victim.
- hair root (PVT07) collected in the
Volkswagen 44-77-KD (floor in front of rear seats env.4)
and Robert James Queriol Eveleight Murat.
- hair
root (C742-05) collected in Volkswagen 44-77-KD (floor
in front of front seats - env.3) and Michaela Walczuch.
There were
no matches between the reference sample genetic profiles
and the following analysed samples:
- Mark
on the cloth fragment collected from apartament Ocean
Club (counterpane of the bed next to the window of the
children's bedroom - env. 5).
- Hair root
collected in the apartament in Burgau (bedroom floor -
vg3).
- Vestigios in the lower zone of the fibre
from the car boot.
