Policia Judiciaria
Portimao DIC
APENSO V
The disappearance of
Madeleine McCann, under the
circumstances divulged in
the case files, drew the
attention of various
entities of the most diverse
levels, notably the
intervention and activities
developed by the Policia
Judiciaria, joined by other
Criminal Police Organs. In
parallel, this disappearance
concentrated an
unprecedented dynamic on the
part of the media,
particularly by the national
and foreign TV stations,
especially by the English
channels who filled their
peak hour news broadcasts
for days with live coverage
from Praia da Luz, as well
as special programmes,
dedicated to the event. In
addition, the child’s
parents, Gerald and Kate
McCann, deployed themselves
in the most varied contacts
and appeals, with the
distribution of images of
Madeleine and the English
police opened a telephone
line dedicated to the
reception of information
relating to the
disappearance, on top of the
event and the investigative
needs of the Portuguese
Police being transmitted to
counterpart police
authorities by means of
Interpol.
All of the previously
mentioned activities, apart
from the merely informative
aspects by the press and
other specific aspects, had
the objective of obtaining
the greatest quantity of
information possible, within
the shortest period of time,
to help the investigation in
two of its most pressing
needs: the discovery of a
live Madeleine and the
compilation of material that
could establish the
circumstances of her
disappearance and if it were
the case, its association
with criminal activity of
third parties, the
collection of “evidence”
that could lead to their
identification and arrest,
for which public
collaboration was requested.
The desire for collaboration
had the consequence that, by
means of different sources
and using more disparate
means, with special focus on
the communications directly
addressed to the police
forces, the Policia
Judiciaria would receive the
most diverse information.
Of these, this chapter deals
with the “sightings” and
locations of Madeleine,
which resulted mainly from
an impulsive desire to help
the investigation, dominated
by passion, which
“inundated” the police
departments, almost always
without the least criteria
and of a predominately
speculative nature.
From the day 04-05-2007
onwards (the day following
the events) and until the
current date in an initially
uncontrolled rhythm, which
slowly decreased, thousands
of reports of “sightings”
and locations arrived at the
PJ, covering the whole of
the national territory as
well as the most diverse
foreign locations, from the
obvious Spain to the unusual
Indonesia and Singapore,
Madeleine having been
recognised in the most
varied locations and
multiple situations and
company, in such a way that
in the same day she had been
sighted in locations
situated at a distance of
4.000 km apart.
Some of the information
lacked any credibility
because of the circumstances
surrounding the sightings
and locations, however, in
the other extreme, other
information required more
solid and effective
systematisation and
follow-up, being those which
due to geography and
spatial-temporal relevance
appeared to be credible and
corresponded to activities
noted in the processed
information contained in the
case files.
There is a remaining
diffused “stain” of
sightings and locations
(some gaining media
coverage, such as those in
Belgium and Morocco) that
contained scarce, vague,
contradictory, incompatible
or incongruent elements that
merited a treatment whereby,
in the future, linked to
more solid elements, they
could be touched on and
resuscitated, and which form
this chapter.

I have followed the case in the press as I live in the Algarve.
However my attention has been drawn by the news that an English
citizen (George Burke) who returned to the village in the
morning from Lagos and who says that he saw a couple with a
child at about 06.00. Would this person not be suspicious due to
being from the village and be returning 7 seven hours after the
events? Please excuse my boldness and if I am bringing false
accusations due to lack of information, I apologise again but
feel that I have to share my preoccupation. I hope this does not
make you lose time.
Good luck

Description and Result of Inquiry:
On this date I went to the abovementioned place with the purpose
of gathering elements related to the previously mentioned
information about a supposed sighting of Madeleine McCann, by a
British individual named George Brooks in the early morning of
4th May 2007.
Once I arrived at the scene, I checked that there was
effectively a restaurant establishment on the first floor of the
complex, called Pizza Hut. This establishment was closed,
because of the opening hours. However, in order to collect
information, I went to another establishment called “Lite Bites”
which is next door and where there was an employee, who
identified herself as GS, of British nationality.
During our conversation, she said that she has worked there
since May of this year, the owner of the space being George
Brooks, identified by the enclosed photocopy of his passport,
which she provided.
She said that the whereabouts of the owner were unknown since
the 21st September 2007. On this date he collected....

From: Inspector Nelson Pacheco
Subject: Communication of situation eventually related
to the disappearance of Madeleine McCann
I bring to your knowledge that today at about 10.30 a phone call
was received by this police station from Goncalo Duarte, manager
of the 'Repsol' petrol station in Albufeira, saying that
yesterday, the day 04-05-2007 at about 11.13, at that petrol
station, a vehicle was observed, make Renault 9, blue in colour,
with number plate AQ-23-81, occupied by a couple and a young
girl, possibly aged 3 to 4 years old, with very similar physical
characteristics to those of the missing English girl, Madeleine
McCann, aged 3.
Following superior orders, the undersigned officer went to the
scene, accompanied by Specialist Assistant Fernando Domingos,
having proceeded to record a CD-R containing the elements
mentioned above, which, after having been viewed by officers
responsible for the investigation, nothing of interest was
revealed, because the girl observed on the recording was not
Madeleine McCann.
However, the company Eurest Portugal in charge of the restaurant
management in the area of Olhao, on the A22 was requested to
provide security video footage from 22.00 of 3rd May to the
present date, according to the adjoined fax.
I bring this to your attention,

To Whom It May Concern,
We are writing to you from a
non-government organisation in
Athens, Greece. The Smile of the
Child. Our Association has the Greek
Centre for Missing & Exploited
Children. Our toll-free number SOS
1056 is used by the public to report
information with respect to missing
children. We then promptly provide
the information to the Greek Police.
In fact, we work closely with the
Police in cases of missing children.
As a result of all the publicity
surrounding Madeleine McCann, we
have been getting information from
all over Greece. The information has
already been sent to the Greek
National Police ( Missing Persons'
Unit). They can be reached directly
at 00302106476289 or 00302106476280.
For your benefit, we have translated
the information we have received and
included it in this e-mail.
On May 11th, 2007, at 19.00 we
received a call from a store-owner
who claims that 3 individuals with a
little girl came into her store, 2
man and one woman. Accompanying them
was a boy, 12-14 years old and a
little girl approximately 4 years
old. The girl was slim with blonde,
curly shoulder-length hair and blue
eyes. They were speaking in broken
Italian and Albanian and referred to
the little girl as "Michaela". The
little girl bore a strong
resemblance to the photograph of
Madeleine shown by the media.
On May 12th, 2007, at 11.00, a male
caller saw a little girl at the
seaport of the island of Milos in a
store that sells watches. The little
girl resembled the photograph of
Madeleine publicised by the media.
On May 15th, 2007, a lady called
from the island of Siros to report
that in the central square of the
town she saw a tall blonde man with
a little girl that resembled
Madeleine.
On May 17th, 2007, on the 14.40
flight from London, UK, to Athens
with Easy Jet, she saw a little girl
that resembled Madeleine. The little
girl was accompanied by two women,
one of whom was elderly.
On May 19th, 2007, we received a
call that approximately one week
earlier (May 12th) the caller saw a
little girl, approximately 4 years
old accompanied by a tall, blonde
woman with short hair. She saw them
along the beach front, near
Aristotle Square, in the city of
Thessalonica.
On May 19th, 2007, we received
another call from a Ms Anna
Dracopoulou who claimed that on May
13th, 2007, approximately 15.00 she
saw a little girl who resembled
Madeleine hitch-hiking with a man
approximately 40 years old. She
claims that the next day she saw the
same man and little girl
hitch-hiking near a gas station in
the Thiva area (just outside
Athens).
On May 20th, 2007, we received a
telephone call from a Ms Maria
Archaki who stated that on May 19th,
2007, at 19.00, she saw a little
girl who resembled Madeleine
accompanied by a woman, of foreign
origin, on Evans Street in Irakleo,
Crete.

To: The Coordinator of the SRCB
From: Inspector Pedro Azevedo
Subject: Madeleine McCann - Intermarche and Lidl in
Condeixa-a-Nova
In the follow up to communications received by this police
station, taking into account that a girl has been seen who could
be Madeleine McCann, an English girl who recently disappeared
from the Algarve, in two supermarkets situated in Condeixa-a-Nova,
concretely in Intermarche (at about 12.00 on 05-05-2007) and in
Lidl (at about 19.30 on 04-05-2007), according to superior order
the undersigned officer, accompanied by Inspector Marinho Nunes,
went to the establishments referred to with the aim of gathering
more information relating to the facts.
In Intermarche the manager facilitated the viewing of images
recorded on the video security system inside the supermarket.
On these images a Caucasian woman was seen, aged about 40-45,
circulating freely in the supermarket with a girl who appeared
to be 3-4 years old. After collecting products, they both waited
at the check out.
When they were attended, the girl in question left the adult and
ran to join another child who appeared to be slightly older and
a male adult, who were a few metres away in a shop within the
building. The two children played there and with the male adult.
After a few minutes waiting for the woman who was paying at the
check out, the four left the commercial centre for an unknown
destination.
From what was observed, all of these movements took place
without any strange or uncommon attitude, apparently just being
a normal family out shopping.
Then Ana Rodrigues was contacted, the check out operator who
attended these persons, who said she had attended them and that
they had behaved as normal customers and spoke fluent Portuguese
without any accent. When asked if on that day she had attended a
customer who expressed themselves in a language different to
Portuguese, she said she remembered attending a couple who
expressed themselves in French (after lunch time, at about 14.00
to 15.00) and who had nothing to do with these persons. She
recalls this fact well, given that she has worked there for a
short time and this one of the first times that this happened to
her.
Afterwards, we went to the Lidl supermarket, situated at the
same commercial centre, where Sonia Claro (responsible for the
establishment) allowed us to view images from the security video
of this supermarket.
We were able to see that at about 19.15 of the day in question
(time of the security video) the entrance of a family consisting
of an adult couple, a girl who apparently had the same age as
the missing English girl and a boy who seemed slightly older. We
saw that the girl had a hairstyle that was very identical to the
English girl. However, her hair was dark brown and not light
brown/blond.
These four persons entered the supermarket and walked around
normally inside, picking up some products from the shelves.
Afterwards they went to the check out where they paid, then left
the supermarket for an unknown destination. It should be
mentioned that for brief moments the adult male left the other
three while they were waiting to pay, and returned a few moments
later.
Checking the registers of the two establishments, the purchases
made were paid in cash, therefore there was no reference to the
customers' identity.
The photos extracted from the security video from Intermarche
are attached.
As regards the Lidl supermarket, it would only be possible for
the technician who was not present to extract the photos. They
will be joined to the Service Information.
From all the information obtained, it was concluded that the two
girls who were seen in the Lidl and Intermarche supermarkets in
Condeixa-a-Nova on the days 04 and 05-05-2007 respectively, were
not Madeleine McCann.
I bring this to your knowledge.

I am the above named person and reside at the address overleaf.
On Friday 4th May 2007 at approximately 16.40 hours I was in the
car park of the Moonfleet Manor Hotel with my partner Rosemary
Hamilton. Rosemary and I had driven from Rosemary's home in
Mintam Parva, Dorset.
We had planned to go for a walk on the Dorset Costal path,
towards Weymouth.
We parked in the Moonfleet Manor Hotel car park as far from the
Hotel as was possible, this was because we were not using the
hotel facilities. As we prepared to leave the car, we were
sorting out our rucksacks, boots and maps, I heard a child
screaming and crying earnestly. Due to the nature of the crying
I turned and looked in the direction of the crying child. All I
could see at this point was a male leaning into the rear
passenger door of a car and gesturing and communicating with a
child. I would describe the male as white, approximately 6ft to
6ft 2 inches tall of slim build, I believe that he was in his
late 30's. I did not pay much attention to the male but can
remember that he had a reasonable short full head of dark hair,
the male did not have facial jewellery or glasses that I can
remember, he was clean shaven and did not have any
distinguishing features, although I would describe him as having
a sun tan. The male was wearing a short sleeve white top,
without any motif that I..............

........could see. I did not see any tattoos or jewellery on the
male's arms. Due to the positions of the car I could not see
what the male was wearing below his waist.
I could not describe the car, apart from that it was dark in
colour and that it had 4 doors, I could not identify the make,
model or registration number of the car, as several other cars
blocked my view of this car. This incident happened
approximately 30 meters away from me, and lasted approximately
10 - 15 minutes, the child was crying and was very distressed
throughout this time, the visibility was good but my view was
obstructed due to other cars.
As Rosemary and I have left the car park to start our walk, we
saw a small child who I would describe as white female, between
3 amd 5 years of age. I would describe the young child as medium
build and height for that age. She was fair haired and she was
wearing a pink outfit, although I could not describe it if was a
top or dress. We walked through the grounds of the Hotel, to
reach the footpath below the Hotel. We then walked down to the
edge of The Fleet, which is what the waterway is called.
Rosemary and I had a drink that we had brought with us, and
studied the map and decided what route that we were going to
take.
We were sitting having a chat, not hurrying watching some
boatmen who were crossing The Fleet, we had been there 10
minutes when behind us, approximately 40 meters away, towards
the Hotel approached the same male and young girl that who I had
seen in the car park. At the closest point they were 30 meters
away from. The young girl had now stopped crying. The male was
now carrying an item, although I can't remember what it was I
believe that it was to do with the little girl. I could now see
that the male was wearing..............

To: The Coordinator of the Criminal Investigation
From: Inspector Dordonnat
Subject: Madeleine
McCann
I inform you that on this date a phone call was received from
Portimao DIC, from Chief Inspector Tavares de Almeida,
requesting the visualisation of images relating to the subject
mentioned above, provided by the PSP register number 1069/07.
The register in question, copy of which is joined, reports a
participation in which news is given of what happened on
04-05-2007 at about 22.30, of Madeleine having been sighted in a
Vodaphone shop on the first floor of the Colombo Shopping
Centre.
The administrator of the commercial space was contacted, who
said that there were two Vodaphone shops on that floor, one
being Rua da Indias (shop 0124/0125) destined for companies and
another on Av dos Descobrimentos (shop 0109) for private
customers and where the re-charging of mobile phones is done.
With regard to the second shop mentioned, the video surveillance
camera that the Shopping Centre installed in the area that
covers the entrance to the shop, does not have images as it is
focussed on another area of the Shopping Centre.
Next to the Vodaphone shop we saw that there is an internal
system, but that this is only available from the company
headquarters in Parque Expo.
The security officer was contacted and he facilitated access to
the Security Centre where images were visualised that related to
the time of the sighting, with the following results:
1. At about 22.17 an adult enters the shop, aged about 35/40,
wearing dark coloured trousers and a training top, grey with
dark stripes on the sleeves, accompanied by a female child
holding his hand, wearing a pink skirt or dress and a type of
white poncho and white socks (tights).
2. The individual held the girl by the hand, distancing himself
from her momentarily when he goes to the counter, however always
maintaining visual contact with her.
3. The girl is apparently willing, she seems to be accompanied
by someone who is frequently with her or who at least is a
person of her confidence.
4. The individual and the girl leave the shop at about 22.19
without making any purchase or operation in the shop.
5. The images have been preserved by Vodaphone and can be
requested at any moment.
6. From the visualisation made the individual and the girl seem
to be willing, no suspicious movement was noticed.
7. From what it is possible to see, the girl has curlier hair
than Madeleine, and seems to us to be a shorter girl than the
height indicated (90 cm).
8. Four prints were made (black and white) of the images which
are joined, the individual and the girl being visible, although
the recording is in colour.

From: Inspector Anabela Ruivo
Subject: Communication regarding missing minor from Praia da Luz
I inform you that today at about 20.50 this police station
received a phone call from PSP Colombo saying that a lady
identified as Ana Mafalda had gone there to say that on the
previous Friday 04-05-2007 in the Colombo Commercial Centre next
to the Worten shop she saw a girl accompanied by a male
individual, with dark curly hair a 3/4 day beard, wearing blue
track suit type clothes, aged between 35 - 40.
At that time and despite having paid attention to the girl, she
did not immediately identify her as Madeleine, however as she
received some photos of her by email, in which her face could be
seen better, she thinks that this could be the girl who drew her
attention at the Colombo Commercial Centre.
I bring this to your knowledge.

From: Jose Pereira, Portimao DIC
Ana Mafalda told me that on 04-05-2007, between 22.00 and 22.30

Whilst awaiting her turn she saw a 4 year old girl accompanied
by a white male individual.
Today, during the afternoon, she received an email with various
photos of the girl who disappeared from Lagos, Madeleine McCann
and states that she could be the girl mentioned above.
She describes the girl as follows:
Slim, short blond hair, light coloured eyes and aged about 4,
wearing white socks a blue skirt or dress and a pink jacket.
She describes the man accompanying her as follows:

I live in Portugal and on 4th May 2007 we flew back to England
on a Monarch Airline flight (flight Number 2B763) to Gatwick
Airport. In the checking in desk there was a family with a
little boy in a buggy and they had a little girl with them who
looked similar to Madeleine and was looking very tired. I
thought this was strange as it was only 10.55 a.m. The girl had
a pink cardigan on and shoulder length brownish hair, on the
plane we were sat on row 22 and the little girl's family were
further up the plane. The parents description was the guy had
short brown hair and the lady had blonde hair in a pony tail.

Transcript of Statement
The witness appeared at the Valenca GNR station at about 17.40,
to make the following statement:
That he works at the A3 S. Pedro da Torre – Valenca toll station
and that on 4th May, between 11.00 and 12.00, when he was
working at the toll station, he attended a turquoise (between
green and blue) coloured vehicle with a yellow rear number
plate, possibly Dutch or English. A strongly built couple was
travelling in the vehicle, the individual who was driving had
greying hair, which was tied back, and curly, aged about 45/50,
wide face and small nose, brown skin. He was wearing a dark
sleeveless shirt and had a tattoo on his left arm. The woman
next to the man was wearing a skirt and was holding quite a
creased map. In the back of the car, which did not contain any
suitcases or bags, he saw a girl wearing light coloured clothing
and who was not wearing a seat belt. The girl was aged 3 – 4
with light brown hair. When he addressed the couple in English
to ask for some coins to help with the change, the couple did
not speak, were quite unpleasant, even though he told them that
they had a very pretty girl to which they did not respond, all
the time looking at the front of the car.
When he was speaking in English, the girl got up, climbed
between the seats and turned to her, smiling, but without
speaking.
That he only reported this today, as at the time he had not
associated this with the case of the missing girl in the Algarve
and having seen more clearly the photos of the girl last
Wednesday when they were distributed to be put up in the toll
stations.
He emphasises that he is a teacher of oil paint portraits and
therefore recognises people more clearly.
He is willing to make a photo fit of the individual in the car
if this is the person being sought by police.
No further transcription.
With compliments.
The Station Commander.

To: The Station Coordinator
From Inspector Ferreira
Subject: Information
about the Possible Whereabouts of the English Girl Madeleine
I inform you that on this date at about 16.25 Agostinho Pereira
Faustino, a tarmac worker from the Leiria Municipal Chamber,
resident in Leiria appeared before this station with the purpose
of providing the following information:
- On 4th May when he was working in the area of Pedrome, St
Catarina da Serra, Leiria, at about 12.30 (lunch time), he was
at a snack and drink establishment, known to belong to a certain
Joao, he saw a girl who appeared to be about 4 years old, blond,
who asked him for help.
- When asked to be specific concerning what the request for help
consisted of he says that she just took hold of his left arm,
not saying anything.
- He says that immediately the lady from the establishment (who
he presumes to be Joao's wife) called her inside, simply
beckoning her with her arm. She did not speak either.
- He says he found this strange and only now after seeing the
physical appearance of little Madeleine in the press (missing
from Praia da Luz) he deduces that 'it was her who asked him for
help...she had blond hair'. He also said '...she imitated the
hair of her own mother...the one from the Algarve'.
He did not provide any other elements, just adding that he was
at the disposal of the authorities in case they needed his help
to find Madeleine.
For superior consideration.

From: Inspector Cabrita
Subject: Information
about the Disappearance of Madeleine Beth McCann
I bring to your knowledge that today at about 20.25 a phone call
was received by this police station from Manuel dos Santos
Guerreiro, who said that in conversation with his sister Maria,
she commented that in the morning of last Friday, in Quarteira,
more exactly along the road where the Portela Shops are found,
near to Rua do Farol, she saw a male individual, with the
physical features of someone from countries of the East, who
parked his white vehicle, she does not know the model, make or
number plate, he took a girl out of the vehicle, who at that
moment was not wearing any clothing on her lower half, but was
just covered by a dark coloured jacket, covering her chest and
head, this individual handed the girl to another individual,
whose physical characteristics she cannot remember.
From the girl's size, she would appear to be about 3 to 4 years
old. Maria cannot give any details, just that there were no
women accompanying these individuals.
That is all I have to inform you.

Service Information
I bring to your knowledge that on 26th May 2007 Jose Francisco
appeared at the mobile GNR post installed in Praia da Luz,
Lagos, he is from Ourique, married, aged 75. Following the
disappearance of the girl Madeleine, on the day following her
disappearance at a time he cannot remember, he was next to a
kiosk at the entrance to Ourique and saw a dark coloured car, he
does not remember the model or the number plate, nor the
characteristics of the driver, but that the vehicle entered
driving the wrong way up a one way street, making an aggressive
manoeuvre and stopped next to a woman who appeared at the scene
carrying a child. The child was about 3 or 4, he did not check
the girls characteristics nor those of the woman, the woman
having entered the vehicle with the child, at the same time the
vehicle continued but he does not know where to. He says that he
does not know the driver, nor the woman or child, but that he
thought the vehicles manoeuvre was strange and presumes that
this could be related to the disappearance and because of this
fact he purposely came from Ourique to give the information
directly.
He says that at the moment he saw the facts mentioned above
Antonio Manuel Matos a resident of Ourique and employee of the
CM water service was close by him.

On 28th May 2007 Mrs Lilian Daprano, of English nationality,
resident in Alvor, appeared before this GNR Command to inform us
of a situation that had happened to her on 03 or 04 May 2007.
She is a Jehovah's Witness and normally on Thursdays and Fridays
(she has a doubt whether this happened on 03 or 04 May 2007) she
went to the beach in Alvor to spread her religion amongst people
who were there.
On this day, at about 11.00 or 11.15, she approached a man,
apparently British, Scottish or Irish from his accent, who had
two children with him, a boy of about 5 and a girl with the
characteristics of Madeleine McCann.
She thought it strange that the children were not playing
together and at a given moment the girl walked off for about 50
metres, the man...supposedly the father, went to fetch her, and
at this moment she asked some questions of the boy about his
circumstances, he did not reply.
Then she tried to talk to the man, who was not very nice and
when he returned with the girl he reacted with aggression to
Lilian, waving his arms and telling her to go away.
Understanding that the characteristics of this individual were
similar to those of the individual subject of divulgation by the
PJ, and who was involved in the abduction of Madeleine McCann,
she thought she would bring this information, as she thought his
behaviour was strange.
Two pages provided by Lilian are joined, with a sketch and
physical characteristics of the individual in question and some
notes about the facts.

PSP Report
At the time and place mentioned, when I was on duty at the Gaia
4th Brigade Division, I was approached by Alberto Almeida, who
told me that on the day after the disappearance of the girl from
Lagos-Algarve, 04-05-2007, at about 12.50, he transported from
Campanha-Porto a male individual aged 40-45, 1.70m in height,
with fair hair and some white hairs, with an English accent when
speaking some words in Portuguese, who had arrived by train from
the Algarve, carrying a blond girl aged about 3-4 and dropped
them at Rua André de Castro nş 79, Santa Marinha, Nila Nova de
Gaia. The individual had two dark coloured travel bags.
He only reports this today as he was alerted by a former work
colleague, whose name he doesn’t mention, who observed the
passengers getting into the taxi and who only called to alert
him today, he himself who had provided the transport had not
made the association with the case of the missing girl from the
Algarve.
These facts have been made known to the PJ DIC:

Subject: Information about missing girl from Lagos
This police station was informed today at about 13.50 by the
Lurdes Viola, owner of the cake shop 'Verde Marinha' situated in
the Rua da Industria Vidreira in Marinha Grande, that a couple,
apparently of British nationality, frequented the establishment
twice during the last week.
However, on a day that she can't remember, but close to the date
of the disappearance of the English girl from the Algarve, only
the man returned to the cafe the woman not having been seen
further.
The first section of the second brigade was requested to find
out more information and personally contacted Lurdes Viola who
did not add any other elements of interest.

Executing Officers: Inspectors Jorge and Alipio
Description and Result of Inquiry:
On this date we went to the 'Verde Marinha' Cafe situated in the
Rua da Industria Vidreira in Marinha Grande, where we contacted
the owner of the establishment, Lurdes Viola, with regard to the
phone call received by this police station.
The person in question did not add anything to what she had
referred to in her phone call, only clarifying that the reason
for her doubt was only due to the fact that the English woman
had stopped coming to the cafe whilst her husband continued to
do so. She said that she never observed this couple together
with a child. Finally she indicated the address of the apartment
they lived in.
Nothing more of interest was found out,

Subject: Updating of previous information about the
disappearance of Madeleine from the Algarve
On this date, at about 13.30 this police station was contacted
by Lurdes Viola, resident of Marinha Grande, informing us of the
following:
- That last Tuesday or Wednesday she was contacted personally by
officers from DIC Leiria with the aim of providing information
eventually related to the disappearance of Madeleine from the
Algarve, but that in the meantime she has found out more about
the persons known, as follows:
- She had knowledge that the two persons who lived in the
apartment in that city (mentioned previously) are two boys, sons
of the builder Pedrosa (Marinha Grande) who are presumably
abroad (the parents are not known to her).
- That at the moment the apartment in question is occupied by an
individual of eventual British nationality, accompanied by a
blond haired wife, the individual having been seen in the cafe
around the day following the girl's disappearance.
- The individual in question was seen in the cafe at least on
two days with an interval of two days and it was afterwards
commented upon in the cafe that in a private garage of the
apartment he kept a light coloured top of the range car.
I bring this to your attention.

who was on holiday and who confirmed that she had arrived on the
previous day 05 May via Faro and that they were due to leave on
the 15th May.
This citizen
told us that she had come to the Algarve for the third time to
spend her holiday and was accompanied by her daughter H. G. born
on 15-07-2004 and by her mother.
The three
English citizens were seen by us, the child was fine, there was

Subject: Information about the
disappearance of Madeleine
We received a phone call this
morning from someone who identified
himself as Officer Costa (GNR), who
informed us that since Saturday 5th
May, that two 'foreign women', one
aged about thirty and the other
older, about 40/45, rented a house
at Casas de Alcaria, Lot 44, Altura,
Tavira.
These persons had a child with them
,aged about 4 years old, who on the
only occasion she was seen, was
wearing a hat and dark glasses, only
enabling the colour of her hair to
be seen, which was fair.
The behaviour of these persons began
to raise suspicions because since
they arrived at the house they
always kept it shut, even the
windows. They did not leave the
house in spite of there being a
swimming pool, which was 'strange'
behaviour for people on holiday.
He also informed that the persons in
question had a Peugeot vehicle with
number plate 43-74-ZG which they
hardly ever used.
He added that during all of this
time no presence of a male in the
house was detected.

He was approached by a member of the cleaning staff (Rosaria

opposite “KFC” there was an individual apparently of gypsy
origin, 1.75 – 1.80m in height, with dark shoulder length hair
was observing some girls “in a suspicious manner”.
According to the witness, the description mentioned in the press
of a photo fit elaborated by the police, the individual (from

On today's date, 10th May 2007, at 1640 hours I received a call
from a member of the public, namely a Ms Mary LEE of 16xx
WHxxxxxx Roxx, WOODFORD GREEN, ESSEX, 1Gx 0xx, Tel 020850xxxxx.
Ms LEE stated that while waiting to board a plane from
FUEVENTETURA in PORTUGAL, she became aware of a couple with a
little girl who was very fretful, she describes the little girl
as being about 3 years of age, she was in the company of who she
thought was her mum and dad. The little girl's hair was cut
short but it was not a neat cut, it was as if it had been cut
without any due care and attention. Ms LEE further stated that
she did not pay much attention to what she had seen until she
boarded the plane, flight number MYT428 which left PORTUGAL at
1225 hours and arrived at LONDON GATWICK at 1635 hours, she
states that she only knew about the abduction when she picked up
a newspaper on the flight and read about the abduction, she went
on to say that she started to think more about it when she
arrived at GATWICK where she tried to gain a proper look at the
little girl. Ms LEE says that she noticed the little girl had
large eyes like the missing child and that she was completely
white without any colouring.
Ms LEE goes on to say that the mum and dad were totally
disorganised and were very distracted while waiting to board the
plane. She states that the FEMALE with the child was white and
did not look like she had been on holiday as she had no
colouring at all. She is described as white, about 30 years of
age, she had dark brown hair that was tied back and was wearing
short knee length trouser. The MALE is described as black, dark
skinned of ASIAN colouring but did not have ASIAN features, he
was wearing dark-rimmed glasses and was wearing light tanned
clothing. Ms LEE further states that she claimed her
luggage........

Subject: I saw a similar girl
Dear Sirs,
Last Saturday at about 13.30 I was in Adega do Dantes in Lisbon
– in the Bairro Alto area – having lunch. I saw a small girl who
was quite similar to the missing girl Madeleine. She was
accompanied by a couple aged about 30-40. The man had dark brown
hair, in a pony tail style, he was tall, slim and wearing light
clothes. The women had brown hair, long and very straight, also
wearing light coloured clothes. The couple appeared to be
foreign.
Whilst the girl seemed very comfortable with the man (calling
him papa, I did not manage to hear whether they were talking in
Portuguese) the couple seemed worrying to me, they did not speak
much, whilst they sat down for a while, used the wc and left
without lunching.
The reason for this email is that I was told today that a
description of the possible abductor with long hair tied back
was shown on tv.
Nothing further to add.

Between 1200 hours and 1500 hours on 5th May, 2007, the male and
his wife believe they saw a young girl whom they are convinced
was Madeleine McCann within the foyer of this hotel. She
apparently said, "I want ot see my mummy", and was then picked
up by a white female, mid 40's to mid 50's in age, round face,
blonde hair and medium build. This woman placed the young girl
on her shoulder and walked off towards the lifts within the
hotel.
The male strongly believes this young girl to be Madeleine
McCann. When asked why he was coming forward now, (25th
September, 2007), he stated that he couldn't remember where he
had seen the girl before until now as he had constantly seen her
picture in the newspapers and news bulletins. He had only
recently remembered and explained that he didn't want to report
the sighting until he remembered exactly where he had seen her.
The young girl he believes to have been Madeleine McCann was
wearing a white T-shirt and possibly pink or white shorts.

contact, came to this police station to tell of a situation
possibly linked to the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.
On 05 May 2007, between 11.15 and 12.30 when he was walking down
the road near to Luis de Camoes school, Praca José Fontana in
Lisbon, he passed a woman who was carrying a girl “piggy-back”
style and whose features seemed similar to those of Madeleine.
He describes the girl as slim, with a very light complexion, fair
shoulder-length hair (emphasising that her hair was very messy)
and brown eyes. The girl was wearing a red, sleeveless, front
buttoning dress. He see any rings or bracelets on the girl.
As regards the woman, she was aged 36/42, presumably from
northern Europe, fair shoulder-length hair, 1.70 m, a strong
physical build as if she practised sport. She was wearing jeans
and a multi-colour patterned shirt, mainly red in colour.
The witness thought the girl looked sad and found it strange that
she was not in a buggy. He was surprised that the woman looked
away, letting her hair fall over her face when he looked at her.
He has only come to the police station now as he only found out
in detail yesterday about what happened to Madeleine.
I bring this to your attention.
Signed
Inspector Tavares

[b] Subject: Anonymous Phone Call
Today at 10.05 this police station received a telephone
communication from an individual who appeared to be female,
judging by the voice and who did not want to identity herself,
giving the following information.
On 25-04-2007, the individual saw the English couple, the
parents of Madeleine who was abducted in the Algarve in a cafe in
Ourem. The individual says that she is absolutely certain that
it was the couple in question as she had the opportunity to
observe then well. She says that the girl's mother was dress in
the way she had seen her on television, wearing white trousers
and a pink shirt. Madeleine stayed in the doorway of the cafe
and the individual says that a man, whom she cannot describe,
was observing Madeleine.
On the Saturday following the abduction 05-05-2007 the
individual saw Madeleine again in Ourem, in the street, calling
'Mummy'. A man who was with her and who was not the father,
picked her up and the girl became quiet. There was another man
with him and two women. Concerning their descriptions she can
only say that one of the women had blond hair and was of medium
build and that the other had long hair. The latter was a kind of
'gypsy'. Madeleine was wearing a skirt with folds. The second
man was tall.

Service Information
Date: 2007-05-05
To: The Police Coordinator, Dr Amável de
Sousa
From: Inspector Pedro Cabrita
Subject: Information about the
disappearance of Madeleine Beth McCann
I inform you that today at about 23.15 a
phone call was received by this police
station from Perpetua Ribeiro, who said
that yesterday at about 16.00 in the
Peniche Naval Club a tall, ugly, thin
man aged about 50, with a beard, but she
does not remember any other physical
details, entered accompanied by a girl,
with very fair hair, shoulder length,
aged about 4 years, 80cm to 1.10m in
height, wearing a blue track suit, the
individual bought an ice cream for the
girl, at which moment Sra Ribeiro saw
that the girl was quite tearful and
asked her “don’t you say anything?” (in
Portuguese). The girl reacted in a quite
embarrassed manner, immediately lowering
her head and the individual said some
words to her in English which appeared
to be “that’s OK!”.
After commenting upon this with a
colleague who also saw the couple, the
witness thinks the girl was Madeleine
McCann.
She left the following contact number.
That is all I have to inform you.
Signed
